The liquid crystal displays used in calculators and other devices with similarly simple displays have direct-driven image elements, and therefore a voltage can be easily applied across just one segment of these types of displays without interfering with the other segments. This would be impractical for a large display, because it would have a large number of (color) picture elements (pixels), and thus it would require millions of connections, both top and bottom for each one of the three colors (red, green and blue) of every pixel. To avoid this issue, the 128x64 lcd display pixels are addressed in rows and columns, reducing the connection count from millions down to thousands. The column and row wires attach to transistor switches, one for each pixel. The one-way current passing characteristic of the transistor prevents the charge that is being applied to each pixel from being drained between refreshes to a display's image. Each pixel is a small capacitor with a layer of insulating liquid crystal sandwiched between transparent conductive ITO layers.
The circuit layout process of a TFT Lcd Modules is very similar to that of semiconductor products. However, rather than fabricating the transistors from silicon, that is formed into a crystalline silicon wafer, they are made from a thin film of amorphous silicon that is deposited on a glass panel. The silicon layer for TFT-LCDs is typically deposited using the PECVD process.Transistors take up only a small fraction of the area of each pixel and the rest of the silicon film is etched away to allow light to easily pass through it.
Polycrystalline silicon is sometimes used in displays requiring higher TFT performance. Examples include small high-resolution displays such as those found in projectors or viewfinders. Amorphous silicon-based TFTs are by far the most common, due to their lower production cost, whereas polycrystalline silicon TFTs are more costly and much more difficult to produce.

How does OLED work?
There are additional flavors of 320x240 lcd display that are better for different kinds of devices. When a device only needs to display a static pattern with relatively slow refreshes—like the 240x64 lcd readout of a calculator or e-ink displays of the Kindle Paperwhite—you can use something called a passive matrix OLED (or a PMOLED). What is OLED Display?
OLED, or Organic Light Emitting Diodes, are an offshoot of existing conventional LED technology.OLED modules are semiconducting light sources that function through electroluminescence—that is, they produce photons (aka light) by plopping electrons into little electron holes within the device's emissive layer. Basically, electricity goes in and light comes out thanks to a semiconductuctive material, rather than a white-hot metal filament like an old-school lightbulb.

How does an ordinary LED/lcd module work?
Before you can understand OLEDs, it helps if you understand how a conventional LED/lcd module works. Take two slabs of semiconductor material (something like silicon or germanium), one slightly rich in electrons (called n-type) and one slightly poor in electrons (if you prefer, that's the same as saying it's rich in "holes" where electrons should be, which is called p-type). Join the n-type and p-type slabs together and, where they meet, you get a kind of neutral, no-man's land forming at the junction where surplus electrons and holes cross over and cancel one another out. Now connect electrical contacts to the two slabs and switch on the power. If you wire the contacts one way, electrons flow across the junction from the rich side to the poor, while holes flow the other way, and a current flows across the junction and through your circuit.

The colorful and bright TFT LCD Display
This lovely little TFT LCD Display breakout is the best way to add a small, colorful and bright display to any project. Since the display uses 4-wire SPI lcd to communicate and has its own pixel-addressable frame buffer, it can be used with every kind of microcontroller. Even a very small one with low memory and few pins available! The breakout has the TFT display soldered on (it uses a delicate flex-circuit connector) as well as a ultra-low-dropout 3.3V regulator and a 3/5V level shifter so you can use it with 3.3V or 5V power and logic.

TFT LCD Display provide a high performance solution for industrial and automotive instrumentation, audio/visual displays and industrial devices that do not require full color. They offer an excellent contrast ratio, high resolution, wide viewing angles, fast response time, sunlight readability and wide operating temperatures. Available in 3.5”, 5.7” and 7” diagonal sizes(7 TFT display module), the new LCDs offer 100 to 700 cd/m2 front-of-screen brightness and contrast ratios of 800:1, a dramatic increase from the typical passive monochrome contrast ratios of 12:1. The 6.2” module can provide 250 cd/m2 maximum brightness and the 5.7” can meet 700 cd/m2 maximum brightness. Operating temperature for all modules is -20C to +70C.

OLED disadvantages
OLEDs aren't perfect. First of all, today it costs more to produce an OLED Display Module than it does to produce an LCD - although this should hopefully change in the future, as OLEDs has a potential to be even cheaper than LCDs because of their simple design. OLEDs have limited lifetime (like any display, really), that was quite a problem a few years ago. But there has been constant progress, and today this is almost a non-issue. Today OLEDs last long enough to be used in mobile devices and TVs. OLEDs can also be problematic in direct sunlight, because of their emmissive nature. But companies are working to make it better, and newer AMOLEDs are quite good in that respect - some even consider them superior to LCDs.

COG LCD Display is different Serial Lcd Display
Serial Lcd Display Module are Character LCD Modules with integrated RS232, I2C and SPI serial interfaces with a broad range of industry standard sizes in 2x16, 2x20, and 4x20 modules.COG (Chip-On-Glass) displays are monochromatic passive or active matrix LCD displays that can display information as text or in a dot matrix pattern. Since COG LCD display don't have a built-in PCB board, the IC is directly mounted on the glass of the display.
